Overview
BE CAREFULL WHITH PLAGIARISM APPA STYLE
The scenario I chose was the situation regarding John and his paper. In this scenario, John waited until the last minute to work on his assignment and only had 30 minutes until he needed to submit it. John then decides that instead of paraphrasing the article used for his assignment, that he will just copy and paste sections of the original text into his own work. John does list the author in the reference part of his assignment.
This is definitely a plagiarized assignment. In this scenario, John lists the author in the references but that is it. An appropriate APA citation would include the author name, date, title, and source. Of course there are exceptions such as if there is no date present, but listing just the author’s name is never credible or a reliable source.
Another problem with John’s assignment is that he did not put it into his own words and copied the author’s ideas word for word without the use of quotation marks and in-text citations. This assignment is not an example of academic integrity. Walden (2012), lists the following as an example of plagiarism, “acknowledging the source of the material with a citation but failing to adequately paraphrase the original idea or to use quotation marks to show wording was copied.”
John is able to avoid potential plagiarism in the future by giving himself enough time to complete the assignment so that he does not feel rushed and can take the time to make sure his work is up to standard. John can always refer to the manual for appropriate APA citation protocol if he is unsure if something is correct.
