Overview
The assignment: This will be your 1-2 page (double spaced) paper where you either compare or contrast your textbook reading to Lecture 3 on John Locke (posted in the Modules tab). Further instructions are given in the Syllabus under "Compare and Contrast Assignments". Make sure you are citing the actual philosophers writing, not the authors commentary. You can tell it's the philosophical writing by the different font size, or a blue line running vertically along the text. In the online version, the sections may instead have a blue box behind the philosopher's writing. You can email me any questions you have about the assignment before 5pm on the due date.
The pages to read for this assignment are: pages 228- 230, as well as 233 - top of 241
The syllabus instructions: Compare and Contrast Assignments Instructions: Each lesson has an audio presentation of the theoretical points under consideration. The audio is intended to help with the understanding of the philosophical points in the written posted lecture and selected readings for that lesson. Note that the audio can not be used for quotations and thaT the audio also makes this point. Every week there will be a required reading of the textbook. I will also release lectures that pertain to the material of that week. It is your task to either compare the philosophical text readings to the posted written lectures or contrast them. You may choose one or the other, or you can do both. But we do not usethe authors commentary. The authors commentary is helpful to understand the material. Because this is an integrated book with philosophical text and authors commentary, you should pay attention how to tell the difference between actuaL philosophical work and authors comments because we do not use authors comments in our written work. This will be explained in the Instructions for using quotations. Our written assignments will be at least one full page (double spaced) and not more than 2 pages. Assignments will be submitted in a typed format double spaced through Canvas. I prefer Word document formats or PDFs
Instructions for using quotations:
You must cite the passage from the philosophical reading material from only our current textbook, and also give the page number where you found the quote or quotes you used, (not from the authors comments). Do not quote the captions under the pictures or in the picture or related to the pictures. We want philosophical work only. Also, we do not quote from the margins of the page. Quote only from the body of the work. We can tell the authors comments (which are useful for background information) by thesmaller print size in the textbook. We only want to quote from the bigger print size in the textbook which is the actual philosophical material. Another way to tell what you can quote from is that the philosophical text has a dark line running vertically along the text. Only quote from these sections. Also, you can only use direct quotes from the textbook and lecture. Avoid summarizing the text directly. Similarly, you will also cite the passage (quote or quotes) from the written lecture posted for that particular assignment. Also, make sure these are complete sentence quotations using quotation marks and citing the page number (direct quotes). Do not just use a couple words or summarize quotes quote the entire relevant sentence. This applies for both the Lecture and Textbook quotes. Also, if the lecture makes the distinction of several different philosopher’s points, that are related to several different selected readings, then there should be an even number of lecture quotes to text quotes from each of the selected readings. A tip about textbook readings, to help avoid common mistakes. The textbook readings should coincide with the philosophers in the written posted lecture. If they are not a match, you will need to find the philosopher and the content talked about in the written lecture in you textbook. To clarify, you should have 2 or more quotes in each Compare and Contrast assignment, one from my lectures on that topic and one from the assigned reading material. You may want to have more than this basic number, but you need to even up the number of quotes from the lecture to reading material(have the same amount of each). Meaning, if you have 2 textbook quotes, you also need 2 lecture quotes…and so on. After copying the quotations you will use, give a brief explanation of the relationship between the quotes. For example, what is the philosophical point and relate it to a simple ordinary example and explain how it applies.
