Bonus Option 2: Logic and Political Discourse

Bonus Option 2 addresses how we handle policial discourse given what we have reviewed about Logic, constructing arguments, drawing conclusions, and engaging in action. Our political discourse seems to consist more and more of accusations from members of opposing parties regarding many things that have little to do with legislative priorities.

  • How would you analyze the current state of political discourse based on the definition of an argument presented in the material for “Lesson 3: Logic – Video and Notes Reviewing Some Key Points”?
  • What suggestions do you have for creating an environment that fosters more constructive political dialogue?

Lesson 4: Epistemology Part 1 - Discussion Board

In the Discussion Board for Lesson 4 you can address any of a number of issues related to knowledge and skepticism. Choose from the following list:
    1. What is the difference between knowledge and belief?
    2. How certain do we have to be to claim to have knowledge or to hold a belief?
    3. When is skepticism useful? How do we know if we have carried skepticism too far?
    4. Are there times when we believe, or have to act, even if we are skeptical about the claims on which our beliefs or actions are based?
For all Discussion Boards, be sure to include citations for the main arguments in your opening post.
    1. When you refer to a specific item in the lesson, then a shorthand parenthetical citation is all that is needed. For example, (Presentation on Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”, slide 4); or, (Velasquez, p. 6); or, (Illustration of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”, 3:30).
    2. When you reference a source outside of the lesson, please provide enough information for us to find your reference.
    In your posts, be respectful.

You can write directly into the box or copy and paste your response from a Word file. Select "Submit" to publish your post.

A rubric has been provided to guide you in crafting your responses.

Lesson 5: Epistemology Part 2 - Discussion Board

In the Discussion Board for Lesson 5, explain why you think either rationalism or empiricism is the better explanation for how we have or gain knowledge. Is it either/or, or both, maybe neither? For all Discussion Boards, be sure to include citations for the main arguments in your opening post.
