Intervention Design

As you have learned, Applied Behavior Analysis is based on scientific methods that have proven successful for helping change behavior for individuals with ASD and other mental disorders. This has led many to wonder why these methods and techniques can’t be applied to a wider audience. There are those who believe that the field of psychology would benefit by greater use of ABA techniques by both clinicians and researchers.

For this Discussion, you will consider a behavior of yours or of a family member for which an intervention might be needed. This Discussion is designed to expand your view of ABA to working with individuals other than those traditionally served by this approach (i.e., children and adults who are not diagnosed with ASD or an intellectual disability). To do so, you will need to explore the literature to find other applications of ABA.

Post your design of an intervention using the techniques discussed in this course for a behavior of which you are familiar (e.g., for yourself or family member). (Note: You are not to implement the intervention, just design and justify the use of this intervention.)

To Prepare

  • Review the Learning Resources for this week, including the required weekly media programs, to understand intervention design. Note: It is important for you to review all media for this week prior to completing this Discussion.
  • Consider a behavior for which an intervention might be needed for yourself or a family member. Use the techniques discussed in this class to design an intervention. (Note: Make sure you clearly operationally define the behavior you would like to modify.)
