As consumers, we are bombarded with words and images meant to influence our decisions. For the Using Rhetorical Devices assignment, you have to opportunity to take the place of the advertiser. You will create an advertisement that uses at least two rhetorical ploys from Chapter 2 in Bowell and Kemp. Convince me that your product/service is a “must have”!

  • For the Using Rhetorical Devices assignment, you will create an advertisement that uses at least two rhetorical ploys:
  • Explain critical thinking and logical analysis.
  • Analyze various forms of argument for rhetorical devices, fallacies, and possible pseudo-reasoning.

Part I: Advertisement Transcript

  • Write an 80-150 word script of an advertisement.
  • State intended product or service (what are you selling?). DO NOT use a trademarked product or service.
  • Use at least TWO rhetorical ploys from Bowell & Kemp (pps. 46-58) intended to manipulate the audience.

    • Part 2: Explanation and Reflection

    • List and define each rhetorical ploy in your own words. Make sure to cite Bowell & Kemp.
    • At the bottom of your document, deconstruct the fallacies and/or compare the rhetorical devices used and include at least THREE sentences reflecting on what you learned from this assignment. Demonstrate how this exercise helped you improve your critical thinking skills (e.g. will you be more resistant to manipulation?).

    Part 3: Video or Audio Advertisement

  • Create a video or audio file using your transcript.
  • If you would like to make a video, you can use Microsoft Clip Champ (available in Microsoft 365) or enter your transcript into a generative AI service. Please note that you must indicate that you used AI in your submission.
