Art Analysis Project

Overview

PowerPoint project where you will:

Find examples of historically recognized artwork of each theory of art: 1.

Representationalism, 2. Expressionism, 3. Formalism, and 4. Social/political art.

(Examples of artworks can be images or musical clips (both can be inserted into a PowerPoint) -

as there are examples of representationalism, expression and formalism in music as well).

- For each, include your image or music clip, and explain how it fits in that category.

Additionally, you should provide information about who the artist is, what the timeperiod

and context of the artwork is, and make your own assessment about the work – what you

find appealing, what interests you about it, etc. To do this well, you will need several slides

per section.

- For the final section on Social/political art: Choose a final artwork that has either ethical or

social/political significance and explain the meaning or intention of the artist – what the artist is

trying to convey. This means that you should do outside research into the context of the work

of art so that you can accurately interpret the significance of the work of art. Picasso’s

Guernica is a good example of an artwork with ethical and political significance – I offer this as

an example, but you may not use Guernica in this project. Your description and analysis of the

artwork for this part should be substantial – at least 150 words.

-

- You should also include a slide at the end that gives all sources and references (both to the

source of images and to the outside research that you did in order to understand your

artworks).

To clarify should your Power Point should have four different pieces of art or music and

explanatory copy/text for each. Length – PowerPoint should have four different pieces of art and

explanatory copy/text for each that sufficiently addresses the details of the

example.

Submissions outside of the specified parameter will receive fewer points,

and you may be required to resubmit assignments which do not include the

requisite material

Content – In all work, student should strive for substantial and effective

expression of ideas, supporting detail from the materials/readings provided

and relevant examples for such ideas when appropriate. Student should

demonstrate insight into the topic and clear demonstration familiarity and

comprehension of the readings and lecture.

Must include the following:

  • Explanations of art the three theories of art and references to the
  • readings and materials

  • Visual examples of each theory – these should be recognized pieces
  • of art

  • Explanation of artworks, contextualization in terms of time period,
  • artist, and any other relevant info

  • Example of artwork that has either ethical or social/political
  • significance

  • Substantial interpretation of final artwork that shows insight into intent
  • of artist, context of artwork and engagement with outside research on

    artwork

Presentation - You are expected to demonstrate college-level writing skills,

appropriate sentence structure, format, and grammar. Assignments which

are marred by errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling or organization will

receive fewer points, and you may be required to resubmit assignments

which are marred by significant errors.

References - include properly formatted references for all

materials/websites/information which are cited or utilized in your work.
