PHIL 320 I001: C-Roads World Climate

Week #4: C-Roads World Climate

In this assignment you will explore climate change by manipulating variables in a simulation in an attempt to create a positive effect.

Related Course Objectives: CO-6

Directions

See below for example simulation.

For this assignment complete the following steps:

  1. Access the C-Roads World Climate Interactive Simulator Online using Google Chrome or Firefox.
  2. The initial simulator screen shows the BAU (Business as Usual) projection for the temperature increase by 2100 (as of 11/28/2023). Screenshot of the SImulator. There are 4 areas initially, a Greenhouse Gas Net Emissions by Region graph, a temperature change graph, a temperature increase window, and the variable adjustment table. Note the following items:
    • The anticipated temperature increase by 2100 is 3.3° Celsius.
  3. Under Graphs in the top navigation, select Impacts, and then CO2 Concentration. The Temperature Change graph is now replaced by the CO2 Concentration graph. 1b1730c45b7ada3ab58de190Note the following items:
    • The graph shows the CO2 concentration in 2100 at a little over 600 parts per million (ppm).
    • This is above the dotted lines with a maximum of 450ppm, which indicates the scientific recommended goal to minimize the impact of climate change.
    • The current scenario (the blue line) and the BAU/baseline (the black line) match because no changes have been made to the variables by the user.
  4. Change the Emissions Peak Year and the Reductions Begin Year to 2050 (as of 11/28/2023).
    • Note on the CO2 Concentration graph, the Current Scenario line (light blue) has shifted slightly below the BAU line. Hover your cursor over the line to see the exact value. At 2100, the CO2 is 609.85 ppm.
    • Note the overall temperature change has decreased to 3.2° Celcius.
  5. Take a moment to explore the changes you can make to the simulation.
    • Under Simulation in the top navigation menu, you can change the regions viewed and the assumptions that the simulation runs on.
    • Also, the years (2100) and % on the table beneath that can be changed. This will automatically adjust the outcomes of the online simulation.
  6. Under Simulation in the top navigation menu, choose Reset Policies and Assumptions.
  7. Make changes to the Simulation with the goal of having a positive effect on climate change. Try to hit the scientific limits on temperature, CO2 admissions, etc.
    • Take notes on the changes that you make. Since you are using the online simulator your changes cannot be saved.
    • Take a screenshot of one of your simulation screens after your changes.

Here you can see that I have capped emissions for every region at the year 2025 and an annual decrease of 5%, with a 3% reduction in deforestation and a 4% promotion of afforestation. Under View > Outcomes, the simulation indicates that this will result in a 1.7 degree centigrade rise in temperature by the year 2100. It also indicates that the projected sea level rise would only be 0.5 meter. You can see how these figures compare to the BAU (business as usual) levels. Go ahead and explore different simulations with variables in the table, regionally and global, and the options of the Simulation and Graphs menus from the menu bar. See what it might take to bring about a positive effect on climate change achieve the recommended scientific limits on temperature change and CO2 levels etc. It is good to type some notes as you go to note the different variables and your exploration of the simulation because this SIM is online and cannot be saved. You will be composing a 250 word narrative describing your interaction with the simulation. Also, you will want to save and upload an image of one of your SIMs or sharing the link. In the upper right corner of the screen it says Share Your Scenario, and you can do that copying the link.

Example C-ROAD Simulation

Submission Guidelines

  1. Locate the assignment text box. Enter a 250-word narrative describing your experience with the simulator (Use your notes from Step 7 above).
    • This must be done before the next step.
  2. Insert your screenshot.
    • Use the Insert Image button 1484d3ee9510f9b54fdf9eec to select the screenshot from your saved files.
  3. OPTIONAL SUBMISSION PROTOCOL: You can upload your narrative and simulator images via a MS Word or PDF attachment.
