Grossmont Cuyamaca Community College District Conservation of Momentum Lab Report

Overview

This is the link to lab manual https://gcccd.instructure.com/courses/43319/files/...

Here is the simulation link (Links to an external site.).

Basically you will make a configuration and test it 10 times. Then repeat this 2 more times (for a total of 3 configurations, 10 trials each).

For a single configuration, you choose a Hanging Mass M, move the Arm to make the string parallel to the black line on the Arm and record the radius R (arm location). Move the Hole location such that the pink disk is completely inside of the hole. Then remove the Hanging Mass. Carefully adjust the spin rate to return the mass with hooks to its original position. Record the period and it's error. Reset the spin rate to zero, and repeat the measurement of the period 9 more times (for a total of ten times).

Repeat this 2 more times for different Hanging Masses.

Conservation of Momentum Lab

Run the simulation and get the data!!! (Links to an external site.)

For the "in-person" lab, for each spring setting (short, medium, and long) you would launch a ball horizontally 10 times to the floor, and use that information to determine the launch speed of the ball and its error - and then calculate the initial momentum and error in the initial momentum. Then using the same setting, perform an inelastic collision with a cart and catcher assembly, which would have its position recorded by a motion detector and Logger Pro. You are given the Logger Pro files after the collision simulation. You perform 10 collisions per spring setting. Then for each setting, import the text files, and do a curve fit (mt+b) and record the absolute value of the slope (m) and its error. The slope of the position-time graph is velocity. Then you can find the momentum after the collision, and compare to the momentum of the ball before the collision.

This lab took about 14 hours of work - and this is the only plan I made (I think I was hugely OCD and did everything without a serious plan)
