Baruch College Physics Worksheet

Overview

  1. Given that you know the average mass of a cell phone ( about 150 g ), the mass of a square sheet of paper 11.5 cm on the side (20 lb paper), and that the average mass of an adult human in the world is about 62 kg (80 kg in North America), estimate a) the mass of your arm; b) the mass of four sheets of, (20 lb grade) copy paper, c) the mass of a standard tub full of water.
  2. Give yourself approximate values for the variables needed, and estimate (all metric!): a) your kinetic energy when you are jogging on a park; b) the elastic energy of a rubber band stretched 0.12 m c) the speed of sound of air in the room where you are taking the test
  3. For labs 6 to 10, name a) at least three experiments where rulers were used; b) at least one experiment where temperature was measured ( or given ).

4. For labs 6 to 10, which one did you like, a) the best and why , b) the least and why.

5.State the “Law of conservation of energy” and give two examples you have seen in your lab work in this class.

6 Using a pencil, a fulcrum, string hangers, and a70.0g weight, give values of one set of position to balance a) a 100 g weight, and b) a 160 g weight. [No need to experiment]

7.A 50-gram mass is attached to a vertical spring; the spring stretches 8.0 cm. Determine the stiffness of the spring. If it is now stretched an additional 2.0 cm and released to oscillate (SHO), determine its period and frequency of oscillation.

8. Sketch the shape detected by a good microphone for, a) a whistling ; b) A vowel sound.

9. Sketch the amplitude waveform for the third resonance observed in Exp 10, “Measurement of the speed of sound in air”

10. Make a sketch of the apparatus used in the experiment 8, on the conservation of energy.

11. A rubber band with a stiffness k = 35 N/m is stretched 12.0 cm, with a 1.0-gram paper bullet on it. The band is released horizontally from a height of 0.40 m. Assuming that energy is conserved, how far horizontally did the paper bullet first hit the floor?

12. Give four examples of objects that have an approximate simple harmonic motion.
