Water Flow from Faucet Questions

To understand the concept of flow rate and continuity.

Post

  • What happens when water flows from your faucet?

Using the water faucet in your kitchen or bathroom, open the faucet slowly to have the most laminar flow possible, and observe the water falling down.  Look at the water flowing at the base of the faucet (point 1) and a few centimeters down (point2)

Does the speed of the water flow change as it falls?

Does the diameter of the water column remain the same or change?

What quantity remains the same for point 1 and point 2?

  1. Using items found in your kitchen, design a simple experiment to determine the flow rate of the water coming out of your faucet.
