Overview
The discussion activity is associated with the lab for this module. It allows you to review the data collected by your classmates and get an idea of how the magnetic field and its inclination angle are changing around the world.
The discussion is aligned with module learning objective #2.
MLO 2. Describe magnetic fields and how they relate to magnetic polesPart 1: World Map
Each student should select two different countries around the world.
- For each country, select a city.
Using the NOAA web site for the Magnetic field, find the value of the "Total Field" of each city.
On the Google MyMap place a pin for each selected country. Change the shape and color of the pin according to the ranges below.
Ranges of the magnetic field and pin selectionIf the "Total field" is Use the pin shaped as aColorbetween 20,000 nT and 30,000 nTHeartBluebetween 30,000 nT and 40,000 nTStarGreen between 40,000 nT and 50,000 nTDiamondYellowbetween 50,000 nT and 60,000 nTPinRed Part 2: Response When the majority of the class added the two marks on the Map, post a comment. In your comment specify which countries you selected, what is the magnetic field at the locations, and explain if you can see a pattern of the magnetic field around the Earth.
