Overview
Newton’s 1st Law: An object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force.
Newton’s 2nd Law: Describes the changes in net force and their effect on the body; acceleration of the body depends on the mass of the body and net force acting/applied on the body.
Newton’s 3rd Law: If two bodies exert forces on each other, these forces will be the same in magnitude and opposite in direction – for every action there’s an equal but opposite reaction.
Newton’s 3rd law can be used to explain rocket launches. The thrust is generated by the rocket’s propulsion system. As the engine burns the propellant (solid or liquid that has mass), it is accelerated through the propulsion system and expelled out of the rocket producing a force. The thrust is the reaction force of the force generated by expelled gas – for every action, there’s an equal but opposite reaction. The thrust acts opposite to the weight (mg) of the rocket, enabling lift-off.
Briefly research one of Newton’s Laws and describe how it can be applied in science or engineering. Provide references.
Write a ½-1 page summary of your findings and explain everything in detail (11-point Arial font, single-spaced); you may use any relevant equations and include drawings and/or diagrams.
