Make sure to use the Problem Solving Guide to help you with your solution

AND MAKE SURE IT'S HANDWRITTEN

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Use the Problem Solving Guide as a general guide to your solution.
  • Upload a single PDF that has pictures of all your solutions.
  • Show your work and pay attention to significant figures & units.
  • 50% of points is for seriously attempting all questions
  • 50% of points comes from one question I choose at random to grade.
W3 Problem Set

QUESTIONS

  1. A MONOATOMIC ideal gas at 295 degrees Kelvin initially occupies 0.150 cubic meters at a pressure of 2.00 atmospheres.
    (a) How many moles of the gas are there (HINT: convert to correct units first)
The gas then undergoes two steps:
Step 1: expands at constant pressure until volume doubles.
Step 2: expands isothermally so volume doubles AGAIN (so final volume is 4 TIMES initial volume).
    (b) After Step 1, what is the temperature of the gas?
    (c) What is the total work done at the end of the two steps.
  2. Load up this Desmos on Maxwell Speed Distribution Links to an external site..
    (a) Change the molar mass (M) value to be that for F2 gas. (google it! the current value is for 02 in units of kg/mol)
    (b) Find the temperature at which the average speed is 700 meters per second.
**You may need to change the range of allowed values of T on Desmos for this**
For the temperature your found in (b):
    (c) What are the most probable and RMS?
    (d) What is the probability that the speed of an F2 molecule is greater than rms speed?
    (f) if I wanted to cut the average speed in half, what temperature do I need?
  3. The volume of an ideal gas is adiabatically reduced from 200 L to 74.3 L.
The initial pressure and temperature are 1.00 atm and 300 K.
The final pressure is 4.00 atm.
    (a) Is the gas monatomic, diatomic, or polyatomic?
    (b) What is the final temperature?
    (c) How many moles are in the gas?
  4. At the end of the Adiabatic Processes video to an external site. there is an example question. Do it!

QUESTIONS

  1. Find the change in entropy if 72.5 g of aluminum, originally at 125oC, is melted. (HINT there are 2 steps to finding entropy!)
  2. Find the change of entropy of 2.00 mol of a monoatomic ideal gas if it undergoes a process from A to B where the temperature is cut in half while the volume is tripled (i.e TB=TA/2, and VB=3VA.)
  3. A freezer is a Carnot Refrigerator that makes ice at -4.00oC. Its coefficient of performance is 4.50. Also: 220.0 J of heat is extracted from the freezer every cycle.
    (a) What is the room temperature outside the freezer? (TH)
    (b) How much work does the freezer do in a cycle?
    (c) How much energy is delivered to the room every cycle.
  4. Assume you have 17 gas molecules in a box. What is the percent of time the box will spend with 7 particles on the left side? (see example at end of the Entropy Statistical Version video)
