(8) Physics 2 Lab Simulations: From Ohm's Law to Electromagnetic Waves and Optics

1. (8) Sim Labs:

  1. SIM LAB 1: Ohm's Law
  2. SIM LAB 2: Circuit Design
    • Website: PhET: DC Circuit Design
    • Instructions: Draw and screen-copy 5 DC circuits including components like switches, wires, fuses, light bulbs, and resistors. Write a report based on your observations.
  3. SIM LAB 3: Capacitor Lab
    • Website: oPhysics: Capacitor Lab
    • Instructions: Use the simulation to adjust various parameters and collect data on the charging of a capacitor. Write a report including data analysis.
  4. SIM LAB 4: Millikan Oil Drop Experiment
    • Website: oPhysics: Millikan Oil Drop
    • Instructions: Follow the simulation to determine the charge on different oil drops. Record data and write a report on your findings.
  5. SIM LAB 5: Waves
    • Website: oPhysics: Waves
    • Instructions: Open any 7 wave simulations and exercise as directed. Write a report on what you learned about waves.
  6. SIM LAB 6: Magnetism
    • Website: oPhysics: Electromagnetic Waves
    • Instructions: Exercise and observe the simulations, then write a report on your observations and understanding of electromagnetic waves.
  7. SIM LAB 7: Waves/Interference
  8. SIM LAB 8: Optics/Refraction

2. Write a Lab Report:

  1. Cover Sheet:
    • Include course name and number, student’s name, lab partners’ names, title of the experiment, and due date.
  2. Purpose:
    • Explain the reason for the lab, what was explored, verified, measured, or investigated. Include hypothesis if applicable.
  3. Procedure:
    • Summarize the methods used to collect data. Include relevant details and a labeled sketch of the experimental setup.
  4. Data, Observations, Sample Calculations, and/or Graphs:
    • Present the original data in chart form with proper units. Include observations in complete sentences and sample calculations.
  5. Analysis of Data:
    • Answer all "Analysis" questions from the lab handout. Discuss whether results agree with expectations.
  6. Error Commentary:
    • Discuss at least three possible sources of experimental error, how they affect the data, and the validity of the data.
  7. Conclusions:
    • Summarize the final experimentally determined values/results. Include a brief explanation of how the results were obtained and a statement of the percentage error if applicable.
