Energy discussion

Overview

1. Watch the first video. What determines how far the block is pushed?

  • Specifically, relate the block pushing event to work and kinetic energy, focusing on the marbles as the system. What force is involved? Is the work positive or negative?
  • The commentator mentions that these blocks are lighter for the "safety of the competitors". What's the real advantage to blocks with less mass? (Think about how mass, force, and motion are related)

2. Watch the second video. Describe the energies during the jump.

  • What kinds of energy does the jumper have, and when does he have them?
  • Are there any transfers of energy into or out of the jumper/cord/Planet Earth system?
