of 4Exam 1 Physics 201 - Summer 2025 Instructions ● You will be submitting two things for this exam: ○ A file of your handwritten answers to the questions . ( I will handwrite the answers ) ○ A video or voice note of you explaining your solution to one of the questions( if you can give me a note on what to say in the video for one of the questions ) (your choice which one). Your explanation should be thorough and sufficient to explain it to someone freshly learning this material. ● The exam is open book/notes/videos/other class resources. However, what you submit must be solely your own work. ● Each question is worth 10 points. Questions are graded not just for correct answers, but for showing the correct process. Please clearly show each step you take to solve the problem and make sure your work is legible. You could get 9 points for showing a good process with an answer that is slightly off, but 0 points for a correct answer with no work shown. ● As with other assignments, all work must be HANDWRITTEN either on printouts/extra paper, or using a tablet note taking app. Make sure to include any diagrams or graphs the problems ask for. ( I will handwrite the answers ) ● If any of the questions are unclear, you are welcome to email me or message me through canvas. Good luck!
Problem 1 (10 points) The following is a graph of an object’s velocity over time. a) What is the total displacement of the object between t = 0.0 s and t = 2.0 s? b) At what times, if any, does the object change directions? How can you tell? c) What is the maximum displacement the object reaches from its starting point? At what time does it reach this displacement? d) Draw an acceleration vs time graph for the object over the same time interval. Include numbers and labels on your axes.
Problem 2 (10 points) A father and son are playing catch. The father tells his son to “go long” and throws the ball. The ball is thrown at a 38° angle from an initial height of 2 m, with an initial speed of 22 m/s. The boy is standing 25 m away from his father when the ball is thrown, and immediately begins running away from his father at a constant speed of 7 m/s. If the highest the boy can reach to catch the ball is 1.5 m, is he able to catch the ball before it touches the ground? Assume the boy will stop running if it would help him catch the ball.
Problem 3 (10 points) Three blocks hang from a massless, frictionless pulley, as shown in the figure. Block A has a mass of 9.0 kg, Block B has a mass of 12.0 kg, and Block C has a mass of 20.0 kg. The blocks are initially held at rest, and then released. a. Draw free-body diagrams for each of the three blocks b. Find the tension on Block B and the tension on Block C.
