Overview
Meet Jordan. Jordan is a 19-year-old college student experiencing intense anxiety and mood swings. Jordan frequently feels overwhelmed, has difficulty concentrating and sometimes experiences prolonged periods of sadness followed by bursts of energy and impulsive behavior. After struggling with these symptoms for several months, Jordan decides to seek help from a psychologist.
Now that you've reflected on how Jordan might have been treated in 1974, let's think critically about the implications of those approaches. Psychology has grown significantly since then, but outdated ideas still affect how people view mental health. It's important to identify what may have caused harm in earlier treatment models in order to better understand why psychological science has evolved. What elements of Jordan's 1974 treatment approach might reflect outdated or harmful practices?
