University of Alabama Nondemocratic Regimes Discussion

Overview

Regarding the questions why nondemocratic regimes fail and collapse and whether you think that nondemocratic rule will decrease or increase in countries around the world in the next ten years, please (1) clearly define nondemocratic regimes (up to 3 points) and then (2) decide whether we should focus mostly on (what) economic, ideological, political, or societal factors in (a) accounting for the failure and collapse of nondemocratic regimes (up to 6 points) and in (b) predicting the decrease or increase in nondemocratic rule in countries around the world in the next ten years (up to 6 points).

Your essay should (1) define/explain key concepts and (2) apply the concepts in a well-informed and well-organized comment on a topic addressed in a set of questions chosen for the essay. Since your essay should be concise and focused, I expect about four to six paragraphs (about 800-1,200 words) for your essay. The key is that your essay provides consistent and thoughtful answers to specific questions with clear definitions, explanations, and applications of relevant concepts.

Please make sure your essay reflects a good understanding of relevant concepts and is well-organized, well-written, clear, explicit, and to the point. Please provide clear definitions of relevant concepts included in your essay, and please check the accuracy of your essay's reference to any historical events.

Relevant concepts are key concepts. They may not only be mentioned throughout the text but may sometimes also appear in bold or be included in tables or charts or boxes in focus. Key concepts that appear in bold are also defined in the glossary. Please integrate effectively relevant or key concepts in your essay.

Obtaining the maximum number of 15 points for your essay depends on the clarity of definitions and application of relevant concepts, the logic or soundness of arguments, and the accuracy of reference to any historical events.

Obtaining the maximum number of 15 points also depends on referencing sources used for your essay. Any sources used, even the textbook for this course, should be properly cited, in either the APA style (http://library.concordia.ca/help/citing/apa.php) or the MLA style (http://library.concordia.ca/help/citing/mla.php) throughout your essay, with a list of references at the end of your essay. Direct quotes should appear with the same wording and spelling as they appear in their sources.

Please pay serious attention to these expectations! Failure to properly cite sources throughout your essay and to provide a list of references at the end of your essay will result in a loss of 3 out of 15 points for your essay (2 points for failure to properly cite sources throughout your essay and 1 point for failure to provide a list of references at the end of your essay
