VC Political Science Abortion Rights Discussion

Overview

On Friday, June 24, 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark piece of legislation that made access to an abortion a federal right in the United States. The decision reversed 50 years of legal protection and returned the decision on what a legal abortion is to the individual states, including the ability outright ban abortion services. Since the decision, cases have come about where the public has been forced to think about what abortion access should or should not be.

These include a 10-year-old rape victim having to cross state lines to get an illegal (in Ohio) abortion for her six-week pregnancy Links to an external site., a woman who was forced to carry a skull-less fetus for an additional six weeks before being able to travel from Louisiana to New York for medical help Links to an external site., and a woman who was forced to carry a dead fetus for two weeks before finding a doctor that would perform a D&C Links to an external site..

You may treat this discussion as a respectful conversion about what you think laws on abortion should be, and any thoughts you have regarding the issue. No matter your opinion, I don't want you to be ashamed to express it or exchange it; and the ultimate goal is for you to develop it in a meaningful way, however that suits your beliefs (which are always valid with me, and in my courses). Disagreeing, being passionate, and especially being uninformed are all fine. Personal attacks and disregarding opposing views will not be tolerated.
