SC Week 4 Political Science Voting in The United States Discussion

PART 1: Prompt

Can democracy be sustained when so few people are involved in the political system? Voter turnout in a local election can run less than 10 percent, yet local governments are the ones that affect people more closely on a daily basis. Why do more people not vote in America? Explain. (200words)

Part 2: Questions:

Describe how public opinion is measured and some of the challenges that arise with polling. Be sure to discuss what sampling is, why is sampling use, and how the margin of error relates to it.

In module 4 content page titled “Voting in America” you watched a New York Times Video titled “Why Voting in This U.S. Elections Will Not Be Equal|2020 Elections”. Answer these questions based on this week's reading, video, and your own research on the topic.

  1. What are the five most common voter suppression tactics that the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (an independent federal agency) explains in the video.
  2. What was the Supreme court case of Shelby County v. Holder? What did the strike down of the preclearance mean? What were some of the effects that emerged out of the decision in Shelby County v. Holder (give two examples)?
  3. Fill in the blank:  During the video someone states “You know, this is America. We can put _________ in space, but we can’t vote?”
