Overview
PROMPT: Evaluate the opposition to political parties by America’s early leaders in light of more than 200 years of American experience with parties.
Essay should not simply agree or disagree with early leaders about parties. It should include a short but careful statement of their position and should carefully agree or disagree with the points in this statement. The statement should obviously come early in your essay, but not necessarily in the first paragraph.
List of chosen arguments that need to be used (No specific order):
- The U.S. has separation of powers to limit government power, but by voting for one party for all offices, voters can override separation of powers. (Argue in this case how it would be bad in relation to what the framers wanted for the country)
- Parties are not unified actors (argue as a reason for why the framers were opposed to parties)
- Corruption (argue as a reason for why the framers were opposed to parties)
-Interest groups (rather than voters) influence nominations (argue as a reason for why the framers were opposed to parties)
COUNTER ARGUMENT ADDRESS:
-Democracy can be considered a competition for power, with or without parties (address that democracy is inherently structured for power struggle)
