The key to writing a book review is that you aren't writing whether you like the book or don't like the book. You are writing about what CONTRIBUTIONS the book makes to our understanding, and explaining what other books the book is in conversation with. You are situating it in a broader literature. It is a CRITICAL analysis, and an exercise is metatextual writing.
