Overview
Albert Pike was a senior officer of the Confederate Army and his statue was created in 1901. He is most famous for being the general of the native american troops and a newspaper editor. Although the memorial was torn down in 2020 during the George Floyd and Black Lives Matter Movements, I felt it was a compelling monument for me to research. Out of all the Confederate memory why was Albert Pike chosen to be remembered, and what are the reasons that it was torn down? In my paper not only do I want to research Pike’s history and role in the war, but I think it will be interesting to talk about his controversy in the present day and the opposing views on the monument, and how these opinions specific to his monument connect to our general views of American history and the civil war in general.
This is a detailed paragraph level outline. You should be able to describe what argument you are making in each paragraph and which sources you are relying on to make that argument. You definitely will deviate from this outline as you write the paper, that’s good! Writing an outline is a great way to test out your ideas and make sure you are able to support all of the arguments you intend to make. The paper will be on the history and present status of a Civil War or Reconstruction monument, ideally from the Washington area. You should explore the elements of Civil War memory that the monument evokes and how it has been perceived by the local community over time. Conclude with your own recommendation for what should happen to the monument. Should it be replaced? Amended? Removed? Interpreted?
