Discussion 1
Human activities such as mineral extraction and deforestation have significant impacts on land. Mineral extraction can lead to soil erosion and water pollution, as well as the destruction of habitats. Deforestation can lead to soil degradation, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and the loss of biodiversity. These activities can also have negative impacts on the local communities that rely on these resources for their livelihoods.
Indonesia is in support of deforestation of its rainforests because it is a major source of income for the country. The palm oil industry, in particular, has grown rapidly in recent years, but it has also been linked to deforestation and other environmental problems.
The "tragedy of the commons" refers to the situation in which individuals, acting in their own self-interest, deplete a shared resource. This can occur when there is no clear ownership or regulation of the resource, leading to overuse and depletion. The tragedy of the commons is caused by a lack of incentives for individuals to conserve the resource, as well as a lack of coordination and cooperation among users.
Species extinction is caused by a variety of factors, including habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and overexploitation. Human activities such as deforestation and mining can destroy habitats and disrupt ecosystems, while climate change can alter the conditions that species need to survive. Pollution can also have direct and indirect impacts on species, while overexploitation can lead to population declines and extinction.
There are four steps that can be taken to decrease individual impact on natural resources: reduce, reuse, recycle, and refuse. By reducing consumption, reusing products, recycling materials, and refusing single-use items, individuals can help reduce their impact on the environment. Additionally, individuals can support sustainable practices by purchasing environmentally-friendly products and supporting businesses that prioritize sustainability. Two international examples of sustainable practices are the plastic bag ban in Kenya and the renewable energy initiatives in Germany.

Lesson 7 Response
1. What are the effects of mineral extraction and deforestation on land?
Mining and deforestation have significant environmental effects. Mining causes habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and water pollution. For instance, the Ok Tedi mine in Papua New Guinea contributes to increased pollution of the river Ok Tedi leading to the disruption of marine life. Common effects of deforestation include soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas effects. For example, Amazon deforestation has contributed to the loss of rare species such as Otters, increased CO2 emission, and climate change.
2. Why is Indonesia in support of the deforestation of its rainforests?
Indonesia's support of deforestation is attributed to economic gain through the production of palm oil. The country is one of the biggest producers of palm oil worldwide (Kristen and John). Second, Indonesia supports deforestation for infrastructural expansion. Due to increased demand for land for infrastructural expansion, Indonesia supports deforestation.
3. What is the "tragedy of the commons" and what causes it?
This is a situation where economic goods such as lake have rivalry in consumption leading to exploitation due to human self-interest. It is caused by a lack of property ownership and short-term gain that force individuals to exploit resources by prioritizing their immediate needs.
4. How can the "tragedy of the commons" be managed or mitigated?
'Tragedy of the common' can be mitigated by the formulation of reliable policies for resource management. Studies reveal regulations to set up catching fish limits can manage this aspect in a marine environment (Kristen and John). Second, identifying clear property rights enable and coordinating collection action can manage the 'tragedy of the common.’
5. What is causing species extinction?
Species extinction occurs due to human activities perpetuating adverse effects on the environment. Some of the causes include habitat destruction, poaching, climatic change, and pollution of the marine environment to create harm to the animals.
6. What are the four steps that can be taken to decrease individual impact on natural resources?
Individuals can adopt reuse and recycle practices to reduce the wastage of scarce resources. Second energy conservation is significant when turning off lights when not in use. Third, water conservation by turning off the tap is important to reduce waste. Ultimately, achieving sustainable goals such as purchasing products from renewable materials can reduce individual impacts on natural resources.
