Overview
- These should be roughly 800-1,200 words in length (you can write slightly more if you so choose). Memo assignments ask you to take up a reading, extract an argument from the text, explain it, and then engage in some kind of evaluative exercise by critiquing the argument, explaining why it might be important, or showing us how it is relevant in the current day.
- Last, students must evaluate all or part of this argument. Consider asking one (or more) of the following questions:
o Why (or why not) is the argument/work important? What does it allow us to see or think? What kinds of tools or insights does it give us, if any?
o What Are The Implications Of The Authors Argument?
o Where Might The Author Be Misguided And Why?
o Does the author provide us with counter-intuitive observations? How might these
observations be generative for our study of political theory?
o How is the argument relevant for how we analyze politics in the present?Does it help us make sense of a contemporary problem? Explain.
o How does the argument constitute a deviation, affirmation,or complete-working of an idea we have approached previously in the course? To what end? - In short, students are expected not simply to summarize the argument of an author, but also evaluate, critique or analyze it and explain how and why it might matter for our general study of politics.
- I have attached a rubric and example and I also attached the reading.
