Write an essay no longer than five double-spaced pages (no less than 12-point font) answering ONE of the following questions (Pick the one that you will be more suited to write about)
1. Some people blame Gorbachev for the disintegration of the Soviet Union into 15 separate states in 1991. Others blame Yeltsin. How would you assess the role of these two leaders—and other factors— in causing this outcome? Could either Yeltsin or Gorbachev have prevented this from happening? If so, how and when? Discuss with reference to the reading.
2. How have wars and economic performance affected the popularity of Russia’s presidents since 1991? What other factors influence Russians’ attitudes towards their leaders? Discuss with reference to the reading.
