Overview: In late August 2013, the U.S. seemed poised to launch punitive airstrikes against targets in Syria following convincing reports that the Assad regime had employed chemical weapons against its own citizens -- a brutal violation of human rights and international humanitarian law.
In the end, however, President Obama opted chose not to pursue this military option, opting instead for a diplomatic path intended to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons capability.
Instructions: Respond to the following prompt:
- Submit an initial post to the Discussion Board in which you state your opinion as to whether President Obama made the right decision or not. Justify your stance by including, inter alia, at least some topics covered in this and in earlier modules (e.g., competing domestic and/or international considerations, sovereignty, national interests and values, international humanitarian and/or human rights law, etc.)
- Write at least one substantive response to your colleagues’ posts, agreeing or disagreeing with their positions and/or arguments. Justify your arguments.
