Overview
Overview: The Middle East covers a wide range of countries and issues which pose greater or lesser threats to U.S. interests. Our discussion this week provides an opportunity for you to choose one of those disparate countries or issues and to describe how U.S. action or inaction might protect or advance U.S. interests.
Instructions: Review the materials from Module Five and the notes you have taken on them.
Choose from one of the Middle East’s regional conflicts/issues:
Israel-Palestine
Iran v Saudi Arabia and the Gulf
Libyan instability
- Turkey’s regional actions/role
Syria’s civil war
- Briefly describe U.S. interests – or why you don’t think the U.S. has interests - and describe one diplomatic action that could be taken to advance or protect those interests.
- Remember, your time perspective is early spring 2021 when the Biden Administration is setting out its broad policy for the region rather than dealing with day-to-day issues, particularly the Israel-Hamas War since October 7, 2023.
