10K DISSERTATION!!!

Overview

Now it is time to write up our 10k dissertation. Attached is a recording of my tutors feedback for my literature review and feedback for my dissertation in general + an attached document of everything we have done so far so updates on my dissertation [the edited version] which includes further comments on my literature review which you need to edit.

REMEMBER NO TURNITIN PLEASE AND IT HAS TO BE YOUR OWN WORK!!!

1. What I would like you to do first is sit down and listen to the recording (WHOLE RECORDING PLEASE) so you know the feedback. After you have listened to the recording, READ THE ATTACHED DOCUMENT of everything we have done so far the edited version of our plan for this dissertation and further comments on my literature review. My tutor has given feedback which you can access via recording but also in the document I have attached that has further comments. Just scroll down.

2. After listening to all the comments, edit and make following changes for the literature review and everything else and start writing up the whole dissertation guidance on word count everything is in the recording my tutor has highlighted.

3. The proposed edited chapter outline is as follows:

PROPOSED CHAPTER OUTLINE - EDITED VERSION:

Chapter 1: Introduction. Background and context, Research question and objectives, and significance of the study.

Chapter 2: Literature Review. Historical context of Turkish foreign policy, ‘Neo-Ottoman’ concept in academic discourse, Comparative analysis with previous regimes, Debates on Erdogan's foreign policy, previous studies + limitations, Qualitative and quantitative analysis of economic and diplomatic activities.

Chapter 3: Breakdown of case studies showing Turkey’s re-engagement in the Middle East and whether it is based on ‘Neo-ottoman’ ideology?

Case Study 1- Syria.

Chapter 4: Case Study 2 - Iraq.

Chapter 5: Conclusion.

I have also changed the research question: NEW RESEARCH QUESTION [edited version]:

Q: “Is ‘Neo-Ottomanism’ a useful concept in explaining Turkey’s engagement with Syria and Iraq after 2002?”

You will be ARGUING Turkish Foreign Policy in the Middle East under Recep Tayyip Erdogan ‘Neo-Ottoman’? But to a certain extent.

  • My argument will add nuance by acknowledging that while Neo-Ottomanism may offer insights into Turkey's engagement with Syria and Iraq, its explanatory power may have limitations or require qualification. This allows for a more comprehensive exploration of Turkey's foreign policy under Recep Tayyip Erdogan, considering multiple factors beyond just Neo-Ottomanism. It's important to critically analyse and evaluate the extent to which Neo-Ottomanism shapes Turkish foreign policy in the Middle East, while also recognizing other potential influences. This approach will likely contribute to a richer and more nuanced understanding of the topic.
