Overview
Please respond to one of the following sets of questions.
- How does the distinction between (1) the international system, (2) the state, and (3) the individual as three levels of analysis focus the analysis of international relations? Which of these three levels of analysis do you find most useful in analyzing the current Russia-Ukraine War?
- What would you recommend as the most effective tool of statecraft in the exercise of state power: (1) diplomacy, (2) economic statecraft, or (3) force? Under what conditions would you escalate from diplomacy to economic statecraft to force?
- What types of war do you consider currently of greatest concern? Should we rely mostly on realist approaches (power balancing, deterrence) or on liberal approaches (collective security, arms control and disarmament) to preventing war and managing state security?
