Overview
Directions: The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your knowledge of the required course material. Outside sources should not be used. The response to each question needs to be 2-3 well-developed paragraphs in length (250-350 words) and written essentially in your own words. However, at least two appropriate direct quotes from required course material must be integrated into each response. Finally, be sure to use ample supporting examples and evidence from the required course material. Please use the Chicago Style Manual for all in-text citations, references page, and other document formatting. The assignment will be graded using the associated rubric posted in Canvas. Use of AI: The use of AI chatbots (such as ChatGPT, Jasper, or Perplexity) is strictly prohibited for this assignment. Any attempt to use AI including generating ideas, paraphrasing, or creating any content will be considered a violation of Lynn University’s Academic Integrity policy and will be reported to the academic dean. The only exception is the use of Grammarly for basic grammar, syntax, and punctuation editing. Reminder: Your assignment will automatically be sent to Turnitin when you submit it in Canvas. Therefore, I highly recommend that you submit it a day or two early to determine if all material has been properly cited. This will provide time for you to correct any citation errors that may occur. Required Questions: 1. Course Themes & Threads: Historical Context This course has been grounded in three distinct themes/threads, the first of which is the global/international historical context that shaped or influenced the various international human rights agreements we have studied. Select two of the agreements listed below, but not used for the other two questions, and discuss them with respect to this theme/thread. • Convention against Genocide (1948) • Convention on the Status of Refugees & the Protocol (1951 & 1967) • CERD (1965) • CEDAW (1979) • Convention against Torture (1984) • CRC (1989) • DRIP (2007)
How have historical events/situations shaped each agreement? Are there any significant events or situations that had an effect on the specific rights included or excluded from the agreement? Finally, if those agreements were updated today, what changes might be made as a result of more recent historical events, and why? 2. Course Themes & Threads: Tensions & Intersections A second theme/thread for studying global human rights is the tensions and intersections between the various international human rights agreements. Select two of the agreements listed below, but not used for the other two questions, and discuss them with respect to this theme/thread. • Convention against Genocide (1948) • Convention on the Status of Refugees & the Protocol (1951 & 1967) • CERD (1965) • CEDAW (1979) • Convention against Torture (1984) • CRC (1989) • DRIP (2007) How does each agreement intersect or is in tension with the other agreement? Are there any significant ways in which the two agreements compliment or potentially undermine or contradict each other? Finally, if those agreements were updated today, what changes might be made to address newly emerged tensions or intersections, and why? 3. Course Themes & Threads: Implementation & Enforcement A third and final distinct theme/thread is implementing and enforcing the international human rights agreements we have studied. Select two of the agreements listed below, but not used for the other two questions, and discuss them with respect to this theme/thread. • Convention against Genocide (1948) • Convention on the Status of Refugees & the Protocol (1951 & 1967) • CERD (1965) • CEDAW (1979) • Convention against Torture (1984) • CRC (1989) • DRIP (2007) What challenges and successes have there been, or are there today, with respect to ensuring that people can actually practice or exercise their rights under these agreements? Similarly, what are possible or actual
problems for holding violators accountable when they do not comply with the agreements? Finally, if those agreements were updated today, what changes might be made to enhance implementation and enforcement, and why? Extra Credit Question: Intersectionality & Global Human Rights (25 points) Please note that this question will only be graded if all of the required questions are answered in a complete manner (all parts of the question addressed, required direct quotes, etc.) In the last few weeks, we have examined global human rights issues for people in specific groups: refugees, race/ethnicity, gender, children, indigenous people. Recalling Dr. Kimberle Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality, how does intersectionality create additional challenges for protecting and promoting human rights for people who are in two of the groups? That is, select two of the groups of people listed and discuss specific challenges for protecting and promoting civic/political and economic/social/cultural rights for people who are in both groups (for example, refugees who are transgender or indigenous children). What are some specific key issues or problems for ensuring each category of rights (C/P and E/S/C) for that particular group of people?
