Overview
- Compose a “World Report” chapter that covers the events in a given country, or on a specific thematic area in human rights, during the period December 2023-December 2024 (a full 12-month period). If focusing on a country, your chapter should cover at least four-five distinct areas of human rights developments (for example, freedom of expression, women’s rights, LGBT rights, criminal justice/torture, migrants rights, non-governmental organizations, or others). It must include a final section entitled “International Actors,” where you review what key international or regional institutions (UN, EU, US govt, World Bank, Council of Europe, African Union, ASEAN, World Health Organizations) have said regarding human rights developments in this country during the same period. The chapter should be approximately 1500-2000 words and be written in a straightforward concise narrative/journalistic style, using the active voice. Keep sentences short. You should use drop-down footnotes in Chicago style to reference your sources. (No parenthetical footnotes). Also, write “July 2023” not “July of 2023”. Write “January 1, not January 1st.” If you write on a thematic area around the globe – LGBT rights, health and human rights, environment and human rights, women’s rights – be sure to include coverage of developments under this topic across the globe (at least four-five geographic regions) during the same period. This is not an opinion piece, persuasive writing, or argument-based essay. The style should be straightforward, factual narrative. Deadline to choose country or topic: November 7. Deadline to submit World Report chapter: December 3.Here are a few World Report writing examples; many can be found on the websites of HRW, Amnesty International, Freedom House, and the US State Department Annual Country Reports on Human Rights
