Overview
In examining populism in Latin America, some analysts have drawn a distinction between classical populism and a populism that is more consistently to the left politically. Pick one “classical” populist (either Juan Perón in Argentina or Getulio Vargas in Brazil) and compare and contrast his political style and program with a “left-wing populist” (either Lázaro Cárdenas in Mexico or Salvador Allende in Chile). Do you believe it is accurate to describe both as populists? Why or why not? In your opinion, did one style of rule prove more successful politically, or did they both prove problematic?
The paper should be approximately five (5) pages in length overall (roughly 1,200 to 1,500 words). Be sure to give citations for all sources you quote or use in a substantive way (including any on-line sources you may use), and include a bibliography. At least two of your references should be from the articles that have been assigned for the course as well as one citation from the course textbook. Also, try to organize your answer well, with both introductory and concluding paragraphs indicating the overall direction of the paper, and the general argument that you are making. You may use MLA or Chicago formatting. The paper will be worth 250 points.
