Overview
Prompt:
MLK writes, “A final challenge that we face as a result of our great dilemma is to be ever mindful of enlarging the
whole society, and giving it a new sense of values as we seek to solve our particular problem” (2010, 141). Given our
study of politics and law this semester, on the gender, race and sexuality question, what is, in your mind, the Great
American Dilemma? How do we solve the dilemmas of gender, race and/or sexuality? Which author’s solutions
resonate with you most and why? Be sure to articulate and build your own theory to remedy the social, political and
legal problems that plague contemporary American democracy.
Paper Guidelines:
(a) Also, students must cite at least seven (7) authors READ IN THE COURSE (NO
OUTSIDE CITATIONS PLEASE); four of the eight citations must include Fanon,
MLK, Cohen and Ahmed. Students must include a Works Cited page; you are allowed to use
any citation style that fits your preference.
(b) This final paper must be no less than seven (7) pages. Honors students must write no less
than ten (10) pages. This paper must be double-spaced with normal margins and font size
12. Also, NO USE OF AI (Grammarly, ChatGPT Copilot, Gemini, Deepseek, Claude,
etc). IF ANY STUDENT USES ANY AI, THE ASSIGNED GRADE IS AN “F”
AND YOU WILL FAIL THE COURSE. Papers must be submitted in Microsoft Word
doc (no PDFs, please). Every paper should have an introduction (with a thesis statement),
body and conclusion. Please use subheadings as you organize your paper into sections
& use in-text citations to support your arguments.
Submission Guidelines: Final paper is due Friday, May 2, 2025, at 11:59 pm. Please submit via Turnitin
on Canvas. There will be NO EXTENSIONS GRANTED. Late papers are accepted but will incur a
5% grade penalty every 24 hours after the stipulated deadline.
Grading Guidelines: “A” papers are those that are well-written with minimal or no grammatical errors.
Such papers also illustrate mastery and fluency of the texts and authors alongside their central
holdings. This paper requires profound analytical reasoning; it requires an explanation of the
implications of both the authors’ and the student’s respective positions. If you so need it, I strongly
recommend visiting the University’s Writing Center and/or GA (Stephen) for writing help.
