Assess the future of the internationalization of U.S. criminal law
The authors of "Policing the Globe" assert that "Attempts to further internationalize policing face considerable political resistance, provoke familiar turf battles and age-old concerns about infringements on national sovereignty, and are limited by enduring problems of mistrust... Measuring the effectiveness of internationalization is frustratingly elusive, with the favored indicators easy to manipulate and often having more of a perceptual effect than substantive meaning. Conformity with international criminal law enforcement standards, ranging from the protection of endangered species to curbing money laundering and the trafficking of persons, often represents little more than 'paper compliance,' especially in less developed countries with anemic enforcement capacity."
Your response should answer the following:
- Do you agree with the authors' assessment of the internationalization of U.S. criminal law above? Explain why or why not.
- Recalling the class themes from Module 1 (pasted below), should the U.S. continue to exert its influence over international criminal and counterterrorism enforcement? Cite at least 1 theme in your response.
- Include YOUR final project country in your response. For instance, an example of a U.S. engagement that helped your country, or an area of concern that your country could benefit from U.S. (additional) involvement.
