If you are on one of the two debating teams, please submit your individual position paper before participating in the debates. Your position paper should be no longer than one or two pages. Base your arguments predominately on the Required and Recommended Readings and a limited amount of independent research. Submit your position paper by no later than Wednesday night at midnight.
If you are on one of the two evaluation teams, you should submit your evaluation of the debate by no later than Monday morning of Week 6 at noon. On the evaluation form, you need to address the following five topics.
- In your opinion, what team won the debate and why?
- Please identify one of the better exchanges in the debate. What was good about the exchange?
- Please identify one of your peers who made a strong argument using legal sources and evidence. What was extraordinary about his or her argument?
- Please identify one of your peers who could have done a better job of crafting a legal argument. What could he or she have done better to advance his or her argument?
- Did the debate change your opinion on the debate over gun control and/or its relevance to homeland security law?
To be clear, each of you will receive two separate grades for this week's debate. If you are on Team 3 or Team 4, you will receive a grade for your written submission and then you will receive a grade for your participation in the discussions., i.e., how you answer the questions posed by your peers and your instructor. If you are on Team 1 or Team 2, you will be evaluated first on the questions that you ask in the discussions and then on your evaluation of the debate.
If you have any questions about the debate requirements, you are free to contact me via email. My email address, can be found in the Course Tools > Classlist area.
