Discussion 6: Understanding Prison Subculture
Prison subculture is a culture that prisoners develop while in prison. It includes their beliefs, values, attitudes, and practices. Prison subculture is often recognized by its specific language, hierarchies of rank and power, and authority relationships among prisoners.
Prison subculture is largely the product of socialization that occurs inside prison. It's brought in from the outside walls by offenders who have developed their beliefs and norms while on the street. The process of taking on norms and customs of prisons is called prisonization.
Prison subculture is often recognized by:
- Specific language
- Hierarchies of rank and power
- Authority relationships among prisoners
Prison subculture is often based on loyalty and respect from one inmate to another. The convict code is an inmate-defined and -regulated culture that encourages inmates to:
- Refrain from snitching
- Do their time
- Be tough
- Never become too friendly with officers
Culture is often more intensive than subculture. For example, a person's native language or languages are an aspect of their culture. Subcultures such as science fiction enthusiasts may develop a unique vocabulary but this isn't nearly as intensive as a native language.
With this information, discuss how these same subcultures exist outside of the prison system. I.E. Public schools, Black neighborhoods, gangs, white communities, politicians, etc. Give examples and examples why you think these things happen. Feel free to compare them to prison and be sure to dialogue with 2 peers or more. 500 words
