  • Due Date: 2359ET on Thursday of the week assigned (unless otherwise directed by your professor).
  • Length: no minimum word count; do not to exceed 3 pages.
  • Format: Download the Formative Assessment 1-2 Template, enter your answers into the appropriate fields and submit. Use 12pt Times New Roman font, single or double-spaced, 1-inch margins, student first and last name on each page (header or footer).
  • File Name: Last name, First name_FA2_BLUE or GOLD (e.g., Jones_John_FA2_BLUE)
  • No cover sheet or bibliography is required for this assignment.
  • Citations are not expected on this assignment but, if you choose to include others’ work, it must be properly cited using parenthetical citations. For example: (Hime, Leyte, p#). Any resources beyond course materials must be fully cited (Chicago Manual of Style).
  • Caution: substantial use of direct quotes or paraphrases, or recounting of the case study, will generally not meet expectations for this short assignment.

C. Formative Assessment 1-2:

“When done correctly, COG planning methodology is the primary practical way to link an objective to a course of action (COA).” (Kornatz, Primacy of COG, 91)

“Determination of the enemy’s center of gravity is a critical element in establishing clarity of purpose, focusing effort, and generating synergistic effects in the employment of friendly combat forces. A plan for a campaign or major operation should be clearly focused on destroying or neutralizing the enemy’s center of gravity while adequately protecting the friendly center of gravity...” (Vego, Operational Art, 238)

This FA will use previous group assignments unless otherwise directed by your professor.

Prompt:

  • Part I: Given your assessed enemy operational objective, list the critical factors, and determine the enemy operational COG. Provide a brief rationale for your enemy COG selection.
  • Part II: Given the enemy operational COG identified in Part I, address what you consider to be the three most important critical capabilities (CC). Then identify 2-4 associated critical requirements (CR) and at least two critical vulnerabilities (CV). Assess whether and how friendly planners sought to attack / exploit the CVs you identified.
