Overview
FA 2.3 - C2 & SustainmentA. Formative Assessments (FA’s) are ‘open book’ but individual effort, only. Any student evaluated as “not yet” meeting expectations on an FA will be assigned appropriate remediation by the professor. (See p.10-11 of the syllabus for the Academic Honor Code; p.7 for remediation.)
B. Submission Requirements:
- Due Date: 2359ET on Thursday of the week assigned (unless otherwise directed by your professor).
- Length: 900 words.
- Format: MS Word (.doc or docx), 12pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, student first and last name on each page (header or footer).
- File Name: Last name, First name_FA#
- No cover sheet, bibliography, paragraph headings/titles, etc. are required for this assignment.
- Use parenthetical citations to indicate passages from the case study which support your arguments, for example: The Japanese operational objective was X (Hime, Leyte, p#). There is no expectation that students consult resources beyond course materials; if you choose to do so, they must be fully cited in footnotes using the Chicago Manual of Style.
- Caution: substantial use of direct quotes, paraphrases, or recounting of the case study will generally not meet expectations for this short assignment.
C. Command & Control and Strategic Deployment:
“When other Generals make mistakes their armies are beaten; when I get into a hole, my men pull me out of it.” (The Duke of Wellington, reflecting on his troops’ resilience after Waterloo)
“Together we deliver.” (USTRANSCOM Motto) “TRANSCOM’s motto should be: just try fighting without us.” (Unknown staff officer)
Prompt: Describe three important considerations when establishing a C2 structure for a Joint Task Force and explain how such choices might affect the chances of mission success. Items you might address include command relationships/authorities, levels of command, headquarters locations, joint operations areas, multi-national participation, etc. Cite historical examples of successful or unsuccessful C2 arrangements to illustrate your points.
In terms of operational factors, discuss how strategic lift capacity, line of communication, and base of operation availability drive planning for joint operations overseas. (See sessions 1.3 Operational Factors and 1.4 Theater Geometry for review) How might strategic lift availability shape the selection of joint force capabilities?
