Post 1: Initial post addressing the discussion board topic. Think about your local governments and their expenditures. Are there areas in which you think they spend too much money? In what areas do you think your government should focus more attention and money?

Local governments have to balance a lot of competing priorities and where they can spend money can have a direct impact on the community. In my opinion, one area where local governments can sometimes overspend in on administrative growth and non-essential projects that do not directly improve services. While planning and development are clearly important, there are times when resources are spread too thin across projects to do not provide value to the public. I believe local governments should focus more attention and funding on essential services, like public safety and infrastructure. Services like fire, EMS, and law enforcement are critical to the daily safety and well-being of the community. I see firsthand how funding effects staffing levels, training, and equipment. Departments that are properly funded are better prepared to respond to emergencies and provide a higher level of service.
Infrastructure is another area that deserves more attention. Roads, utilities, and public facilities directly effect quality of life and even long-term community growth. investing in these area not only improves daily life but also helps prevent larger, more costly issues in the future.
Local governments should prioritize spending in areas that directly impact safety and promote long term sustainability while limiting low impact expenditures.

As an individual who lives within Central Florida's growing region, there seems to be an ongoing struggle of balancing growth through development with accountable spending by local governments. The one area that I think is being wasted by the local government is administrative overhead and duplicate/unnecessary projects. For example, when multiple studies and/or consulting agreements are contracted out for the same issue; this can create a barrier to progress while creating additional unnecessary expenses. Furthermore, I feel that "aesthetic" projects (such as excessive landscaping or beautification) while useful to the community, at times get prioritized before community problems.
On the flip side, I believe that local governments should be investing in the areas of infrastructure and public safety. As a result of the continuous growth in population, Central Florida's road system, along with its ability to manage traffic and provide adequate public transportation will require a large-scale overhaul in order to minimize congested roads and enhance the quality of day-to-day living. Similarly, as a result of population growth, so does the need for local governments to fund public safety. This includes providing resources for fire service, law enforcement and emergency medical services. Providing sufficient staff, equipment and training for first response personnel will undoubtedly positively impact community well-being.
Lastly, education and youth programming should receive more attention and funding from local governments. Funding for after school programs, tutoring and community centers can help to prepare future generations for success, and ultimately reduce some long term societal issues.
