Overview
Hi, I need your help with an assignment.
This assignment has two connected parts:
- Essay Plan: 600 words
- Final Essay: 2500 words
For now, I need to complete the Essay Plan first. After the essay plan is completed and the topic and structure are confirmed, the Final Essay will be developed based on this essay plan.
I have attached the Essay Plan and Final Essay instructions, as well as the teacher’s additional guidance on the Essay Plan. I will also send the relevant readings, lecture materials, and further instructions for the Final Essay later. Please follow the requirements carefully, because the Essay Plan needs to be strong enough to support the later 2500-word Final Essay.
My preferred topic is:
Selective Protection and the Responsibility to Protect: A Critical Comparison of UN Security Council Responses to Libya and Syria
This Essay Plan should focus on:
- the UN Security Council
- Responsibility to Protect, R2P
- state sovereignty
- collective security
- P5 veto power
- the different UN responses to Libya in 2011 and Syria after 2011
- political will, national interest, Security Council deadlock, and selective protection
- how reforms could improve the UN’s performance in achieving peace with justice
For the Essay Plan, please include:
- a brief description of the essay focus
- a clear main research question, with sub-questions if useful
- 3–4 key themes / body points that will form the main structure of the later Final Essay
- for each key point, explain what this section will discuss, why it helps answer the research question, and which sources will be used
- references under each key point to show preliminary reading and research
- relevant theories or concepts, such as collective security, sovereignty as responsibility, and great power politics
- references used in constructing the essay plan
- a preliminary bibliography with at least 10 credible academic or primary sources
- APA 7 referencing style
Please note that the Essay Plan can be written partly in essay format and partly in bullet points to organise the 3–4 main themes. However, the bullet points should not only be headings. Each point needs a brief explanation of what that section will cover and how it will help answer the research question.
The preliminary bibliography is not included in the 600-word limit. The main Essay Plan should be kept around 600 words and should not go too far over the limit.
This Essay Plan should not be written as a full essay, and it should not simply summarise the Libya and Syria cases. It should clearly explain what the later Final Essay will contain, how the analysis will be developed, and how the key themes will work together to answer the research question.
Please make the content analytical and critical rather than purely descriptive. The focus should be on how the Libya and Syria cases reveal challenges facing the UN, especially the structure of the Security Council, P5 veto power, great power politics, inconsistent implementation of R2P, and possible reform directions.
To avoid academic integrity risks, please do not use AI to directly generate or rewrite this Essay Plan or the later Final Essay draft. Please base the work on real lecture materials, readings, and academic sources, with proper analysis and referencing. If you think any AI tool needs to be used for assistance, please let me know first and do not use it directly.
After the Essay Plan is completed, I would like to continue using the same topic and structure to develop the 2500-word Final Essay draft. I will provide more specific instructions and requirements for the Final Essay later.
