HTY 115:CBE2-World Civilization I

Milestone Activity 3

You have reached a Milestone Activity! Please be sure you have completed all of the learning activities. Milestone Activities are important stops along your educational journey to check your progress towards mastering the competency and to get feedback and guidance from your tutorial faculty.

Please note: You must complete this Milestone Activity before moving on in this competency. Milestones ask questions that touch upon concepts covered in previous Learning Activities and provide you with the opportunity to see concepts from the perspective of experts in the field, your faculty.

This Milestone Activity is not graded and will not impact your score on your Final Assessment; however, your response must score a “Proficient” or “Exemplary” on each rubric criterion, listed in the Assignment rubric, in order to access and submit your Final Assessment.

To complete this Milestone Activity, read the prompts below and then provide your response based on the activity guidelines. In order to score a “Proficient” or “Exemplary”, your response must be thoughtful and substantive, and you must reference or cite content from this competency. Your tutorial faculty will use the attached rubric to determine if your submission shows the depth of thought required to successfully complete this Milestone. Let’s get started!

What do I want you to do?

This learning outcome has focused on the historical themes within a particular time period. The time period discussed is the classical period.

Pick one of the following civilizations: Ancient Greece, The Roman World, India: Mauryan to Gupta Dynasty or Classical Period of China.

Create an annotated timeline that explains at least 6 major events, ideas or people that help to define the classical period of that civilization. Explain what the classical period is and how these events reflect the classical period characteristics.

You may not have specific dates for these events but be sure that you put the events, ideas or people in chronological order in your annotated timeline. For example, if you talk about Alexander the Great, Socrates, Aristotle and Plato be sure that you have them in the order from oldest to youngest in order to show how each scholar impacted the next.

In your annotated timeline explain how these events, ideas or people allow the civilization to reach its pinnacle of power and achieve its greatest accomplishments. In your explanation in the annotated timeline explain what the accomplishments were and why they were so important. Also explain how one event, person or idea led to the next. Include transition sentences from one entry to the next.

Write everything in your own words. Do not use quotes as a substitute for your own words. Be sure to include the source in parentheses at the end of the paragraph.

Citations should look like Chapter #, pg. # and/or video title and timestamp. The textbook should be your first source and the videos should be supplementary. The best milestones combine all of the sources.

DO NOT USE OUTSIDE RESOURCES.

Why do I want you to do it?

This allows you to think about the accomplishments that occurred in the classical period of one of the major civilizations listed above. It also allows you to show that you can identify and describe historical themes within a time period.

How do I want you to do it?

    1. You need to make an annotated timeline. You can do it the simple way or the table way. If you have questions, email your competency facilitator. Remember the timeline is an annotated one so you need to include an explanation for every date and it's corresponding event.
      1. Simple Way
        1. Use Microsoft Word or Google Docs and type the following:
          1. Date/Time Period -- Event
            1. Explanation of the Event goes under the date/time period and event -- This should be written as a paragraph.
      2. Table Way
        1. In Microsoft Word or Google Docs, click the insert tab and put in a table. You'll only need two columns: one for the date and one for the event and explanation. Click here to learn how to insert a table. Click here to learn how to add columns and rows to your table.

What to include in your submission

        1. Create an annotated timeline that explains at least 6 major events, ideas or people that help to define the classical period of one of the following civilizations: Ancient Greece, The Roman World, India: Mauryan to Gupta Dynasty or Classical Period of China.
        2. You must use the sources provided. Do not use outside sources or ChatGPT or any AI program.
        3. Start the annotated timeline with an introduction about the importance of the classical period for the civilization you choose.
        4. Be sure each entry in your annotated timeline includes a date/time period, an event and then an explanation of the event. The explanation should explain the who, what, where, why and how of the event, person or idea. Why is it important?
        5. Explain what the classical period is and how these events reflect the classical period characteristics.
        6. You should end each entry in the annotated timeline with a transition sentence that ties it to the next event and in the beginning of the next event you should have a sentence that continues explaining how the events connect and link to the larger event. These are called transition sentences. Click here to learn more about transition sentences.
        7. You will need a conclusion that ties all of the events together and discusses how one event leads to the next.
        8. You should write in complete sentences and use proper grammar and spelling. Do not use quotes as a substitute for your words.
        9. You should write everything in paragraph format.
        10. Do not use lists or bullet points.
        11. Your annotated timelines together should have at least 400 words.
        12. You need to cite the sources from the module. Include the chapter number, page numbers from the textbook or the title of the videos and the time stamp or the title of any other articles used in the competency. Citations should look like Chapter #, pg. # and/or video title and timestamp.
        13. If you make up page numbers or timestamps in your citations, your work will not be graded until you include proper citations.
        14. DO NOT USE OUTSIDE RESOURCES.
