Overview
Write a 2000-word research essay on one of the following questions.
Your essay should engage with at 1-2 of the required readings from the second five topics of this module (unless otherwise specified) and it should draw upon at least 2 secondary sources (you may use recommended readings that are on the syllabus or do your own research in the library – please use sources from academic books or journals).
To what extent does the Haitian Revolution show the universalism of republicanism? How does Thomas Paine’s understanding of republicanism differ from CLR James’ conception of republicanism, if at all? How did caste challenge the aims of political revolution in India? According to CLR James and Jawaharlal Nehru how does history relate to their understandings of republicanism? Although revolutions aim at liberation from oppression, they do not always end in the foundation of political freedom, according to Arendt. To what extent does Arendt’s claim apply to either the Haitian or Indian anticolonial revolutions? To what extent have postcolonial republics challenged or reimagined enlightenment ideas of liberty and equality? Develop your own question. This must be approved by the module convenor or your tutorial teacher. Key requirements for this assessment:
a clear statement of your argument in answer to the question, that is to say single sentence thesis/argument (e.g., I argue that … or this paper contends that …) reasons to support your answer and a discussion of these in relation to the readings you have chosen with (if possible) counter-arguments, clear engagement with the required readings in your own words that is substantiated or backed up by citations from the authors to whom you refer, and a consistent and well-structured line of argument that is restated or summarised in the conclusion. Use the 10 sources provided in the attached document.
