Overview

1. Site Reviews. The purpose of this assignment is for students to research, select, and discuss two different (currently existing) sites/practice settings that are consistent with their individual counseling philosophy, populations of interest/presenting concerns, and preferences for service delivery (e.g., Advocate Illinois Masonic Outpatient Clinic, HANA Community Center, Hartgrove Adult in-patient, etc.,). Although students are not required to speak with or interview a contact person from their chosen sites, they are encouraged to reach out to each site with questions that can’t be easily ascertained from each site’s website or other advertising materials. Ideally, students are encouraged to choose two sites that are significantly different from each other based on the client/patient populations served, structure or focus of treatment, or level of restriction. For example, please do not select two adult in-patient units for this assignment to review unless one unit is substantially different from the first unit. It would be acceptable, however, to review one adult in-patient unit and one adolescent in-patient unit. a. General Site/Setting Information (500 to 700 words): Students will be asked to first provide a general description of each site/setting (i.e., Name, location, broad range of services provided, populations served, etc.,) that should be easily gleaned from the site/setting’s website. In addition, students should provide an overview of each site’s structure by delineating (a) any different types of departments, treatment teams, and/or any specialized treatment programs they are known for, (b) the administrative structure (who makes the major decisions), and (c) funding sources. Please make sure to include descriptions of two different sites such that each description should be around 250 to 350 words). b. Site Interests (500 to 700 words): Students should discuss their reasons for choosing both sites which should include how they see their professional interests, identified client populations/presenting issues, and preferences for service delivery (e.g., short-term counseling, group counseling, intake paperwork, case management, crisis work) fitting into the structure and culture of each site. Students should also discuss the challenges they might anticipate as a practitioner at each site and how they would go about managing these challenges. Please make sure to include the reasons for choosing both sites, such that each description should be around 250 to 350 words).
