- Grading Rubric is here: Is attached in the pdf photo form.
- Argument + thesis: do you produce a relatively coherent essay with a solid argument, in which you use evidence from the myths and texts in order to prove an overall point?
- Factual accuracy and selection of the most appropriate material from the course as a whole (ie, have you chosen the best myths for the question?). Although the questions are quite broad and will allow you to address a number of different aspects of course material, it is important that you show breadth of knowledge across the course as a whole.
- Use of mythical material AND analytical ability: do you just retell the myth, or do you make an argument based on mythical material? Do you use the mythical material to think through broader themes, drawing connections to Greek society and culture, and the way that myth reflects and helps define cultural protocols?
- For example: This is just an example below
- Whole essay has to be in proper paragraph form .
- Retelling the myth: In the Theogony, Zeus overthrows Gaea.
- Analysis: Zeus' defeat of Gaea in the Theogony reflects the dominance of the patriarchal, male principle over a more primitive feminine principle.
- Another example is -
- Retelling the myth: Hercules has to undergo 12 labours.
- Analysis: Hercules' labours, frequently involving the "purification" of the world from dangerous monsters, articulate his role as a civilizing, culture hero, a role which is rendered ironic due to his frequent breaching of social protocols.
- Here are the instructions you will be given:
- "Please write on ONLY THREE of the following essay topics. You should aim to do two things at the same time: (1) list major ideas which address the topic of the essay question; (2) give examples from Greek myth which illustrate each of the major ideas (there can be several examples for each major idea, of course). Try to balance the number of ideas and the number of illustrations. DO NOT narrate the stories from Greek myth, except for the part that is relevant to your major idea (i.e., don't just retell the myth, but focus on the specific parts of it that are most relevant to the thesis of your essay - the more specific the better!). Your essay should demonstrate the relevance of a mythical example to the idea which you are discussing. Be sure to select your examples from an overview of the course content as a whole, not just the last four weeks."
- "How long should my essay be?"
- I tend to set rigid criteria for length and should be 500 words exactly for all three essay ;
- Essay 1- 500 words exactly
- Essay2- 500 words exactly
- Essay 3-500 words exactly; however, please make sure you use the time you are given to the best of your abilities. Since you have two hours, we will be expecting a substantial, well thought-out essay that is at least several paragraphs long. "Essays should at least several paragraphs long will only receive good grades. Please be sure to use the time you have to plan your essay and think through the most relevant mythical material to support your argument!

CLAS*2000 Grading Rubric: Short Essay Component
Grading Rubric
Criteria | Excellent (34-40) |
Depth of concepts, knowledge of course content | The essay demonstrates excellent breadth and depth of understanding of class content, and an ability to go beyond what was covered in the course to produce a perceptive, original reading of the passage or the sources. There is clear evidence that the student has engaged with and deeply understood the set readings. There are no more than 1-2 minor factual errors in the essay. |
Analytical ability | The student demonstrates an outstanding ability to analyze the myths in a creative and original way (extrapolating from details in the myths to discuss broader themes in a highly insightful way; making connections between different aspects of the material in creative ways; making connections to aspects of ancient society and culture). |
Use of examples from myths | The student uses a wealth of highly relevant and specific examples from the myths and other content covered in the course in order to thoroughly ground their argument in textual evidence. |
Organization and writing mechanics | The essay has excellent flow and is logically constructed (within the constraints of what is possible in a time-restricted test situation). The argument is clear and easy to follow; the reader does not have to “work hard” to parse the argument and what the writer is trying to convey. The writing is sophisticated, effectively utilizing appropriate diction (ie, and most important you use the right word for what you are trying to say). |
