Then, review cognitive psychologist Dr. Jesse Martin’s post about formal operational thought and higher education here: https://hethoughts.wordpress.com/tag/formal-operat...
He includes a list of processes that require formal operational thought. Read the list and consider how a client’s abilities (or the lack of those abilities) might affect the counseling process.
Write a 2-3 page paper addressing the following prompts:
- Briefly explain the last two stages of Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory
- Discuss influences that may hinder or prohibit a client from developing formal operational thinking processes and how that would affect the counseling process
- Suggest at least three things a counselor should consider or do differently to accommodate adult clients who may still rely on concrete operational processes of thinking
