Overview
Counselors will work with children and adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This is a common disorder that is presented in clinics, schools, and agencies. This week you will look at assessing, conceptualizing, and treating ADHD in a child and family.
Read Case 2.1 in Ch. 2 of The Clinical Assessment Workbook: Balancing Strengths and Differential Diagnosis.
Conduct an assessment of the client described. If there is no Mini-Mental Status Exam completed, indicate that in the cognitive section of the Mental Status part of the assessment. (I encourage you to be creative and fill in the gaps with information you can imagine would be appropriate for this client)
Although the case study may not provide in-depth information for all sections of the biopsychosocial assessment, please use the information as provided, and be creative, filling in details that would be appropriate in this case. Remember, the purpose of this Assessment is to see how well you synthesize and tie together ALL the information.
Complete a Biopsychosocial Assessment and Treatment Plan based on the case using the forms located on the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Resources site for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program OR write it up using standard APA 7 report formatting (ensure you hit ALL the sections). Use full sentences and appropriate grammar in these forms.
Include 2-3 clinical assessment tools/metrics you would use to help you assess this client. Be sure to identify tools you believe would help support your diagnosis, justify your choices, and cite them. Use the Assessments to Support Diagnosis section in the Biopsychosocial Assessment form to identify these tools.
Include a Case Conceptualization as seen through your theoretical lens as part of your Biopsychosocial Assessment and in the Description, please include a comprehensive explanation of the DSM-5-TR symptom checklist you use in your diagnosis. Be sure you include discussion of differential diagnoses that were considered and why they were ruled out, using the criteria for those disorders.
Research common treatment goals for the chosen diagnosis before completing your Treatment Plan form. In addition to best-practices interventions, be sure to include parenting and support resources (cite them), as well as a discussion about the impact of ADHD on the family. Justify your treatment plan and all discussions with peer-reviewed research. Follow the same format we previously outlined in the Treatment Plan Bootcamp.
