ASSIGNMENT #2

As many of you know, a significant aspect of the clinician’s role in therapy is to determine when ethical conflicts arise. These are inevitable, so having a firm knowledge of how to spot said ethical dilemmas and also how to handle them can make your job much easier. While you may be an old pro at spotting these dilemmas, a little review never hurts!

Directions:

  • For each ethical conflict below, identify the following and type your answer in the available text box or upload in a Word document:
    • What is the apparent ethical conflict?
    • If applicable, what did the clinician do wrong in the scenario (if it doesn’t outline this, you can skip this question)?
    • What would be the appropriate way to handle the situation?

Ethical Conflicts:

Clinician #1: “A patient of mine recently left town to attend college. Shortly before her departure, she revealed an early history of sexual abuse. The recurrent thoughts and memories were extremely disturbing to her. She refuses to seek a new therapist at school. She has asked me to talk with her by phone; however, I am not licensed in her state. If I don’t talk to her, is this abandonment?”

Clinician #2: “A mentally handicapped child at the local school district is isolated from the rest of his class because of his disruptive behavior. The school district has hired me to decrease the disruptive behavior while still keeping him isolated. However, I feel that he should be integrated and plan to do so without consulting the administration of the school as I know I will receive pushback, but also knowing it is what is best for the student.”

Clinician #3: A counselor at a cocktail party is having a conversation with a woman whom he has just met. He begins to tell her about a client of his without mentioning names. He reveals to her a set of situations in which the client has recently found himself involved and which the counselor finds particularly amusing. The woman appears interested in the counselor’s story until she has heard enough to cause her to believe he is talking about someone she knows...her ex-husband. She asks, “Are you talking about…?” to which the counselor replies, “Yes, you know him as well?” They both laugh. The next day she calls her ex-husband and asks him if what she hears about him is true. He files a complaint against the counselor with the local ethics committee.
