Overview

Background:

For Week 1, I would like you to explore the current role (and occupational outlook) of health and safety professionals. Please review the Occupational Health and Safety website and the information on the 9 tabs (Summary, What They Do, Work Environment, How to Become One, Pay, Job Outlook, State & Area Data, Similar Occupations, More Info). The objective of this week’s internet exercise is to introduce you to the career paths, responsibilities, and impact of Health and Safety professionals, and encourage reflection on their relevance in various industries. Please also reflect on this assignment as it relates to selecting a topic for your Midterm and Final Projects.

Instructions:

Review the following webpage:

Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Occupational Health and Safety Specialists and Technicians, at https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/occupational-health-and-safety-specialists-and-technicians.htm

After watching the video, and reading the overview and corresponding 9 tabs, please prepare a short essay about an industry or sector of interest to you. The essay should address:

  1. What are the primary responsibilities of Health and Safety professionals?
  2. Which industries do you think most urgently need these professionals, and why?
  3. What skills or qualities do you believe are most important for someone entering this field?
  4. Select a healthcare field (here) and apply what you have learned to estimate how a health and safety professional may collaborate with specialist from the healthcare field you have selected.

Your essay should be approximately 400 words. It must cite information directly from the reading of the Bureau of Labor Statistics site above. Please include in-text citations and a bibliography using APA style references.
