ASSIGNMENT TWO (CLINICAL RESEARCH DESIGNS)

Following your review in Chapter 3 of the primary ethical principles (nonmaleficence, beneficence, autonomy, justice, and fidelity/veracity), consider the following scenarios. For each scenario, identify which ethical principle(s) most applies, explain why, and note what you believe to be the most ethical course of action. In your 2 replies to classmates, comment on whether or not you agree with the analysis and if any additional principles should/could be applied.

1) You are assisting in a research project exploring the effectiveness of a modified DBT protocol for adolescents with depression. Informed consent/risks/benefits have been reviewed and the adolescent's parents have signed consent for their participation and the adolescent has assented to participation. During one of your sessions the adolescent shares that she was sexually abused by a relative the previous year and has been engaging in non-suicidal self-injury since that time. She begs you to not tell her parents as she fears they will be mad at her for keeping it a secret.

2) You are assisting in a research study on the effectiveness of a new medication for ADHD. You overhear one of the other assistants telling a client that they should be getting better as they were assigned to the experimental and not the control group.

3) You are conducting the preliminary mental health evaluations for a research study on bariatric weight loss surgery. You are surprised one day when in walks your college roommate. Although you have not been in touch for a couple years, you were once very close. You can see that she's gained some weight, but you don't think it's enough for her to be going through surgery for. You want to tell her this but aren't sure if you should.
